The purpose of the Florida District Lay Academy is to prepare lay leaders to assist their pastors in achieving the vision and mission of their church. Seven courses will be taught over a period of 21 months. The seven courses are Old Testament Introduction, New Testament Introduction, Wesleyan History/Discipline, Introduction to Theology, Introduction to Homiletics, Church Leadership/Management, and Methods of Bible Study. Ministerial students may also take these courses and receive credit for them.
The Florida Lay Academy courses consist of classroom instruction and application sessions. The classroom sessions were patterned after the “Flame” courses. The application sessions consisted of actually taking the material taught in the course and applying it in a cottage Bible study group or small group. The cottage Bible study or small group meets three times each month. The Florida Lay Academy participants are encouraged to invite Christians as well as people who are not attending church somewhere (unchurched) to attend their small group or Bible study.
Pastors and Local Boards of Administration are encouraged to send their lay leaders and potential church lay leaders to the Lay Academy. Each class meets once or twice per month.
Classes are currently being held at the following locations:
District Offices (Wesley Chapel), Ft. Lauderdale, Hollywood, Lake Wales, Leesburg, Pinellas Park, Port St. Lucie as well as Online.
